You spend a third of your life on it and about fifteen minutes choosing it. Worse, most of those fifteen minutes are spent reading online reviews written by people with different bodies, different beds and different climates.
This is the advice we give across the counter, condensed.
The five types, and who each one suits
| Type | Feel | Sleeps | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonded foam | Firm, flat | Neutral | Budget, guest rooms |
| HR foam | Springy, supportive | Neutral | Most people, best value |
| Memory foam | Contouring, slow | Warm | Side sleepers, light partners |
| Pocket spring | Bouncy, zoned | Cool | Couples, heavier sleepers |
| Natural latex | Responsive, dense | Cool | Long life, allergy sufferers |
If you cannot decide, HR foam and pocket spring are the two that disappoint the fewest people.
Firmness by sleeping position and body weight
Firmness is not a quality rating — it is a fit. Two rules cover most cases:
- Position: side sleepers need medium to medium-soft so the shoulder and hip can sink; back sleepers need medium-firm; stomach sleepers need firm so the lower back stays neutral.
- Weight: above roughly 85 kg, go one step firmer than the label suggests, because every foam compresses more under load. Below about 55 kg, go one step softer or the mattress will feel like a board.
Couples with very different preferences should look at pocket springs, which respond independently on each side, or a dual-comfort mattress that is firm on one face and medium on the other.
Standard Indian mattress sizes
| Size | Inches | Centimetres |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 36 × 72 / 36 × 78 | 91 × 183 / 91 × 198 |
| Double | 48 × 72 / 48 × 78 | 122 × 183 / 122 × 198 |
| Queen | 60 × 78 | 152 × 198 |
| King | 72 × 78 | 183 × 198 |
Measure the inside of your bed frame before ordering, not the old mattress — old foam shrinks. Storage beds and diwans frequently need custom sizes, which we make routinely.
Thickness: 4, 5, 6 or 8 inches?
- 4 inches — children, diwans, folding beds.
- 5 inches — guest rooms and lighter adults.
- 6 inches — the standard for most adults and most Indian frames.
- 8 inches — plusher feel, better for heavier sleepers and for beds where the frame sits low.
Check headboard height and storage-bed lid clearance before choosing 8 inches. It is the single most common return we prevent by asking.
Heat and humidity: the Indian variable
Dense memory foam traps body heat. In a non-air-conditioned bedroom in Mumbai or Chennai, that matters more than any marketing claim. Gel-infused memory foam helps a little; pocket springs and latex help a lot, because air moves through them.
Humidity also means mattresses need to breathe. Stand a foam mattress on its side in the sun for an hour twice a year, keep a slatted or ventilated base if possible, and always use a breathable cotton protector rather than a full plastic sheet.
What you should expect to pay in 2026
Queen-size, indicative ranges from the Mumbai market:
| Type | Queen price | Life |
|---|---|---|
| Bonded foam | ₹4,000 – ₹9,000 | 4–5 years |
| HR foam | ₹9,000 – ₹18,000 | 6–8 years |
| Memory foam | ₹12,000 – ₹28,000 | 7–10 years |
| Pocket spring | ₹15,000 – ₹35,000 | 8–10 years |
| Natural latex | ₹25,000 – ₹55,000 | 10+ years |
Spending more on the mattress and less on the bed frame is almost always the better trade.
Warranty and care
- Keep the invoice and warranty card — claims need both.
- Rotate head to foot every three months. Do not flip single-sided mattresses.
- Use a protector from day one; most warranties are void on stained mattresses.
- Never fold or roll a spring mattress. It permanently damages the coils.
- Replace when you wake up stiff and sleep better in hotels — usually the honest sign.
Everything above is available to try at our Goregaon West store, including custom sizes.
Two minutes lying down tells you more than two hours of reading. Come in, try three types back to back, and we will tell you which one your spine preferred — it is usually visible from across the room.
